Reading Strategies

What should you do after your read?

Simple. You can complete the 'L' (learn) column in a KPL chart, and, using the entire chart, create a gist statement. The KPL chart is used to organize your thoughts and learning while the gist statement is just a short sentence that makes sure that you comprehend the main idea of the text.

A KPL is a chart that has three sections: one where you write what you already know about the text (previous knowledge), another where you write your predictions, and finally, one where you write what you learned.

Once you complete this chart, you can then write a gist statement. A gist statement is basically a brief summary on what the text was mostly about. You can search for any keywords throughout the text to help you write this statement. You should aim to make less than twenty words.

Here is an example for an article I read:

"Creating a complex password will prevent hackers from harming you by accessing your account."
